Passage 1
One day last November, Tom Baker stepped out of his house into the morning light and headed across the rice fields toward the bank of the Rapti River. Tom, a 32yearold school teacher in the farming village of Madanpur, was going for his morning bath.
As he approached the river, the head of a tiger suddenly appeared over the edge of the river bank. Before he could turn to run, the tiger was upon him. It jumped on his shoulder and threw him to the ground, and its huge jaws attacked his head in a killing bite.
Peter Smith was also on his way to the river and saw the attack. He screamed. The tiger lifted its head and roared at him. Peter ran.
From the window of his house John Brown heard the tiger roar and ran out to see it attacking a man. He screamed, too, and all the villagers ran out shouting as the tiger dropped its victim and ran off. When the villagers reached the river bank, Tom was already dead.

Passage 2
I’m a Chinese student studying in Canada. I have been a boarder with the Carsons for more than a year and a half.
The Carsons live in their own house, which has four bedrooms including the one in the basement(底层) which I live in. Judy does all the work in the house and Andrew is responsible for the work in the garden. When they go out in the evening, they often ask me to look after their children.
Judy’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Morris, lived in another city. Judy was their only child and naturally they doted on Judy’s children. They often sent the children presents.
Last April Mr. Morris died. Now that Mrs. Morris was quite alone, I expected that Judy would want her to come and live with them. One day, Margaret told me grandma was coming to live with them and her daddy and mummy would want my room back. The news didn’t surprise me and the next day I went to Judy and asked her about it. I said I couldn’t think of living in their basement room any longer if it was needed for Mrs. Morris. Judy seemed surprised at first. Then she told me there was no need for me to move, for they hadn’t yet come to any decision about her mother coming to live with them. “Naturally I’m worried about my mother. She has been in poor health.” She smiled sadly and added. “To be honest, Andrew and my mother have never got on well. We’ll wait a bit and see what happens. Perhaps Mother will be all right living herself, or perhaps they will both change their minds.”
That was six months ago. During this time I’ve heard that Mrs. Morris has had two illnesses and that her health has got worse. A nursing home was mentioned once but Mrs. Morris refused to go there. So up to now she’s still living alone and I’m still living in the basement room.

【 】67. Why did the speaker expect Mrs. Morris to come to live with her daughter?
A. Because Mr. Morris was dead.
B. Because Mrs. Morris suffered from illness.
C. Because Mrs. Morris lived all by herself.
D. Because of all the reasons mentioned in A, B and C.
【 】68. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?

【 】69. Why didn’t Mrs. Morris come to live with her daughter’s family?

C. Because she was in rather poor health and could not come.
D. Because she did not want to leave her own house.

Passage 3
As she walked round the huge department store, Edith reflected how difficult it was to choose a suitable Christmas present for her father. She wished that he was as easy to please as her mother, who was always delighted with perfume.
Besides, shopping at this time of the year was a most disagreeable experience: people trod on your toes, poked you with their elbows and almost knocked you over in their haste to get to a bargain ahead of you.
Partly to have a rest, Edith paused in front of a counter where some attractive ties were on display. “They are real silk,” the assistant assured her, trying to tempt her. “Worth double the price.” But Edith knew from past experience that her choice of ties hardly ever pleased her father.
She moved on reluctantly and then quite by chance, stopped where a small crowd of man had gathered round a counter. She found some good quality pipes on sale—and the prices were very reasonable. Edith did not hesitate for long: although her father only smoked a pipe occasionally, she knew that this was a present which was bund to please him.
When she got home, with her small well-chosen present concealed in her handbag, her parents were already at the supper table. Her mother was in an especially cheerful mood, “Your father has at last decided to stop smoking.” She informed her daughter.

Passage 4
Nowadays, a standard for measuring power has changed. These changes foretell a new standard for measuring power. No longer will a nation’s political influence be based solely on the strength of its military forces. Of course, military effectiveness will remain a primary measure of power. But political influence is also closely tied to industrial competitiveness. It’s often said that without its military the Soviet Union would really be a third-world nation. The new standard of power and influence that is evolving now places more emphasis on the ability of a country to compete effectively in the economic markets of the world.
America must recognize this new course of events. Our success in shaping world events over the past 40 years has been the direct result of our ability to adapt technology and to take advantage of the capabilities of our people for the purpose of maintaining peace. Our industrial prowess over most of this period was unchallenged. It is ironic that it is just this prowess that has enabled other countries to prosper and in turn to threaten our industrial leadership.
The competitiveness of America’s industrial base is an issue bigger than the Department of Defense and is going to require the efforts of the major institutional forces in our society —government, industry, and education. That is not to say that the Defense Department will not be a strong force in the process because we will. But we simply cannot be, nor should we be, looked upon by others as the savior of American industry.
【 】76. Now a nation’s political influence depends on _______.
A. the strength of its military forces
B. its ability to compete in industry
C. economic markets
D. both A and B
【 】77. The Soviet Union was not listed as a thirdworld nation just because of _______.
A. its powerful military forces
B. its vast land
C. its industrial competitiveness
D. its contributions to world peace
【 】78. The author indicates that _______ is threatening American political power.
A. other countries
B. the declining U.S. industrial base
C. a new standard for measuring power
D. less advanced technology
【 】79. America succeeded in shaping world events over past 40 years probably because of _______.
A. its ability to adapt technology
B. its ability to take advantage of the capabilities of its people
C. its ability to compete in the world markets
D. both A and B
【 】80. The purpose of writing this article is _______.
A. to draw the readers’ attention to a new standard for measuring power
B. to demonstrate American political influence in the world
C. to emphasize that efforts must be made to strengthen the declining U.S. industrial base
D. to show American industrial prowess

[范文]
Advertisements are forcing their way into people’s lives. People refer to advertisements in their daily lives because they are consumers. The advertisers are usually manufacturers, retailers and salesmen. Their merchandise needs to be advertised to bring it to the attention to the customers. Thus nearly every product is advertised in some way. To a large extent, good advertising leads to success while bad advertising can mean failure.
There are many ways to advertise and ‘ads’ come in different forms. Newspapers carry advertisements. Some products are publicized on TV and radio which bring them into notice of a wide audience. Billboards also carry advertising. Advertising is a big industry now and many agencies have been set up to furnish a variety of forms.
However, advertising is not always truthful. A product is often misrepresented. The advertiser exaggerates the benefits of the merchandise he wants to sell. Thus, he misrepresents the truth. The consumer falls victim to such advertising. Millions of people have bought advertised products and have been dissatisfied with them.
